Alistair Baillie.co.uk

website

Alistair Baillie.co.uk is my personal web site which has been around in various forms since 2002. The most recent reincarnations have featured my blog, detailing my life in general and my experiences training to be a deck officer in the merchant navy.

It is powered by a piece of software I wrote for my blog off web site which as well as acting as a standard blog, automatically checks for updates on other social sites and then imports, formats and displays them on my main blog. The best example being YouTube video's posted to my account are copied across automatically.

DP Technical Services

website

DP Technical Services is a small start-up light and sound company that supplies lighting and sound to various events. They wanted a web site where they could showcase their services as well as manage clients.

The web site is designed to be easily maintainable by the owner and full templates were provided for use with dreamweaver.

As well as the main site they also required a database driven private site where DP Technical Services employees can access the information about their clients and check on the progress of outstanding tasks.

UKCT Server Administration System

web application

UKCT is a community owned and run server, they needed a way to keep track of who had contributed money to the running and an easy way to create, edit and delete Web sites, DNS entries, FTP accounts, TeamSpeak Accounts and mySQL Accounts without giving everyone administrator access to the box.

The server runs on Microsoft Windows using IIS for web site hosting. All these tasks can be achieved online through a web interface which communicates with a back end program to modify IIS and Microsoft's DNS server.

Strathclyde Telegraph

website

While studying at the University of Strathclyde in 2004 I became the online editor for the University's student newspaper, the "Strathclyde Telegraph".

The web site acted as an online version of the newspaper allowing comments on articles and featuring a discussion forum.

Free Fader

application

Free Fader was one of the first programs I wrote and is what got me interested in programming. The very first version of Free Fader was released in the summer of 2001 while I was in fifth year of high school and reached version 10 when I ceased development in 2006.

Free Fader is a free AOL chat room add on which gives the user multicoloured 'faded' and optionally wavy text within America Online chat rooms. The software is compatible with AOL version 6 or higher, with Free Fader 10 being compatible with AOL 9.

Free Fader turned out to be a very popular addon for AOL with version 10 receiving more than 5,000 downloads in the first week it was released. While development has now stopped and I have long since left the world of AOL, Free Fader still receives over 100 downloads every month (June 2009)!
